The “Ideal type” is an idea that has loomed over men and women for all of history. Socrates and Plato discuss it in the dialogues and consider what it represents and how it is a meaningful aspect of education. (It is the means, perhaps, of how we teach others to love what is worth loving.)

The Bible, especially the Old Testament, is full of types that point to Christ, given to the Israelites to prepare them to recognize and receive Christ when He came to them.

Jesus Christ is the ideal type of a human being, showing us what it looks like to be fully human.

In Norms and Nobility, David Hicks describes it as a kind of tyrannical figure that is constantly calling us to be better people—an essential aspect of classical education, he asserts.
