Leo Tolstoy is arguably the greatest of all novelists and his short novel, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, is a world classic. Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis followed by an equally profound spiritual awakening. The book was written as a response to his awakening.
The plot of the book is simple. Ivan Ilyich, a Russian judge, contracts a terminal disease. While battling the disease, he asks, What was my life for? Where was happiness to be found? How ought a man live? Ivan Ilyich’s conclusions are bracing and poignant.
Tolstoy is arguably the greatest novelist of all time. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for each year from 1902 to 1906. His writings inspired key 20th century figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Together on this webinar we will explore the moral and spiritual lessons of this short book. We will also discuss ways to teach this book and will analyze Tolstoy’s place within the Christian classical canon.
