This summer course will offer an introduction to Latin using the first six chapters of Ørberg’s Lingua Latina per se Illustrata. Kelly Clawson, a graduate from the CiRCE Tirocinium Latinum (Latin Apprenticeship), will model lessons with a variety of techniques to help teachers move from a grammar-based to a natural teaching method for Latin. While no prior Latin experience is necessary, come prepared to layer and learn tools to help you observe and practice language learning skills.
The course offers both an audit (non-assessment) and a certificate track (with assessment), which involves listening and reading homework, as well as 3 short online quizzes each week.
Curriculum
Please purchase required texts to participate in the course.
Required Text: Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata: Pars I: Familia Romana by Hans Orberg
-Optional Text: Lingua Latina: Pars I: Latine Disco: Student’s Manual
-Instructor will provide any additional resources needed.
Assessment Option
If you choose the assessment option, you are committing to submit weekly assignments in a timely manner for feedback and assessments. You may receive feedback from more than one assessor on your assignment. The fee for assessment is not based on how many assignments you submit. If you choose the assessment option and do not submit assignments, the fee is not reduced or refundable. We expect that the weekly assignments for this course will require about 2-4 hours of work outside of live class sessions with reading and writing requirements. Transfers and refunds are not available after the first week of the intensive. Certificates are issued by email for participants who complete all six assignments successfully. Please allow 2-4 weeks after the end of the intensive course to receive your certificate of completion.
