Teaching poetry and art can often be a challenge for the uninitiated, especially if we don’t consider ourselves poets or artists. What artifacts do we pick? How do we decide? What do we do with them once we’ve selected them?
It doesn’t have to be intimidating!
One tradition, called ekphrastic poetry, marries both art and poetry together. Ekphrastic poetry, or simply ekphrasis, are poems that focus on describing a work of art. Ekphrasis is a Greek word that means to point something out or to tell how something is. Ekphrastic poetry has a long and glorious tradition, dating back as far as Homer describing the shield of Achilles in Iliad 18 and extending into modern times with such works as the famous “Ode on a Grecian Urn” by John Keats, among many, many others.
Join us for this webinar in which CiRCE-certified master teacher Kristen Rudd will guide us as we do the following:
● contemplate works of art
● study ekphrastic poems through the ages
● write our own ekphrastic poems
The information in this webinar can be used as a great addition to any literature, history, writing, or art class at any grade level. Participants will receive a list of curated, paired artifacts for further study for students to explore.
