Our students come into our classrooms fragmented and distracted: immersed in a post-Christian culture that tells them to consume and discard, to reinvent themselves at will. When we use ceremonial and repetitive practices in our classrooms, we get to the souls of our students through their bodies. By using what James K.A. Smith calls “recalibrating liturgies,” we teach our students to submit themselves to something transcendent by participating in something communal.
