Presented at the 2017 National Conference in Austin, TX.
In chapter seven of his masterpiece The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame describes a mysterious and awe-inspiring moment that leaves a student (Mole) and his teacher (Water-Rat) in a state of wonder. In this session, we will examine this particular scene of the story and use it to help shape our understanding of numinous. Then we will discuss the role that numinous experiences play in a quality education. In the end, participants should have a more developed understanding of how to recognize, appreciate, and cultivate these experiences for children and for ourselves.
