In Imitation of the Creator: Arts Education and the Incarnation

by

In this lecture, Mr. Hodges will consider the purpose of artistry: to mold the material world so as to embody our invisible and intangible human ideas, experiences, and feelings. This artistry is done in an imitation of how God, in the Person of the Word, embodied His invisible Self to us by way of the Incarnation. By leaving the supernatural out of its educational equations, typical modern educators can neither properly comprehend the arts and beauty, nor the proper significance of the very material world they claim is all there is. Without this imitation, our natural creativity loses its direction and purpose, and the arts are reduced to a means of self-expression or propaganda. How can we, through our education, encourage the next generation to see the material world and the arts through the lens of this imitation?
