The Suitors Are Not Poets

Current CiRCE apprentice, Kim Jahn, wrote this and we liked it so much we thought we’d post it here on the blog.

Have any of you read Joseph Pieper’s Leisure: The Basis of Culture?

I’ve been reading it and for the first time I am seeing the truth in “celebration, feast, and festival”.

The soul of leisure lies in celebration and the basis of festival is divine worship.

The meaning of celebration is “man’s affirmation of the universe” but the suitors are not poets who proclaim their work good. They steal the substance. They have turned the festival into the everyday; they have perverted celebration into mass entertainment. They know not leisure; they know only idleness.

If the suitors succeed they will destroy classical education, all culture and every civilization.
