The following talk, presented at the 2005 CiRCE Conference by Laura Berquist, author of Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum and The Harp and Laurel Wreath, and, alongside her husband, a 2009 recipient of the Paideia Prize, examines the role assessment and standardized testing should have in the classical school – or home school. Neither are perfectly good nor perfectly foolish, she says. Each are useful in their own way, but they must not be, she insists, the be-all and end-all of our instruction.
