In this summer course, CiRCE Certified Master Teacher Jessie Smith will offer an introduction to The Lost Tools of Writing. Designed to help you teach your students, this LTW class for adults will model the teaching process, while also helping you improve your own writing and thinking. This webinar-style class will engage a group of participants as models for a classroom.

These sessions will reveal the ancient truths behind the LTW program while at the same time enable you to teach effectively and powerfully on a day-to-day basis. She will reveal how to solve the three problems all writers face, the questions that make for the kind of deep thinking that leads to good writing, and why writing doesn’t need to be a stressful or intimidating process.

This shortened summer course will cover the big picture of LTW, some difficulties students and teachers encounter, and sample lessons. Over the course of six weeks, we will meet weekly in the evening for two hours online. Jessie will provide a thorough introduction to the tools as well as the teaching of the tools. While we may not discuss the entire Level I content in six weeks, teachers will be prepared to teach at least the first five essays, which is sixteen weeks of lessons in just six weeks.

Join us for this new opportunity to learn The Lost Tools of Writing from home in only six weeks of June and July.

Need to miss a class? Classes will be recorded and made available on the Canvas platform.

There are two options for participating in this intensive with or without assessment. Those who would like the course with assessment will actively participate in completing all the tools and turn in assignments on the Canvas platform. A certificate of completion can be earned at the end of the course for successful completion of assignments.

Required Reading:

Reading The Lost Tools of Writing Teacher’s Guide introduction and appendices is required prior to class. Teaching and reading individual lessons during the class weeks is also helpful.

Assessment Option

If you choose the assessment option, you are committing to submit weekly assignments in a timely manner for feedback and assessments. You may receive feedback from more than one assessor on your assignment. The fee for assessment is not based on how many assignments you submit. If you choose the assessment option and do not submit assignments, the fee is not reduced or refundable. We expect that the weekly assignments for this course will require about 2-4 hours of work outside of live class sessions with reading and writing requirements. Transfers and refunds are not available after the first week of the intensive. Certificates are issued by email for participants who complete all six assignments successfully. Please allow 2-4 weeks after the end of the intensive course to receive your certificate of completion.
