In this course students will be introduced to three canons of Rhetoric: Invention, Arrangement, and Elocution. They will learn tools from each canon that will enable them to better generate, organize, and express ideas. Each class will contain a period of reading and discussing The Lord of the Rings trilogy. We will discuss themes of heroism and humanity, parallels and comparisons between other stories, and moral questions around the actions of characters in the tale. This will provide students with the opportunity to practice thinking tools with issues, characters, and events from the story. In the first half of the course students will master selecting an issue, thinking through both sides of the problem, and writing a rudimentary persuasive essay. In the second half of the course students will learn new skills such as Refutation and Metaphor, with the aim of mastering a complete persuasive essay.
