Herodotus is considered The Father of History, and his work, The Histories, tells the story of the conflict between the Greeks and Persians in the 5th century BC. In this course, students will read The Histories and learn to write a persuasive essay. Each class will begin with narration and discussion of Herodotus’ work, followed by practice of the tools of Invention, Arrangement, and Elocution, as outlined in the The Lost Tools of Writing Level I. Students will consider the actions and decisions of characters from their reading and choose issues for their writing. Weekly assignments will include reading from Herodotus and practicing the tools of rhetoric learned in class. By the end of the course, students will be able to write a Complete Persuasive Essay.
