To a child wandering and lost in the forest, everything he meets may seem scary and uncertain. How can he know what is actually scary? What is safe? What is good? The world of books can leave wandering readers just as frightened and unsure as any forest. With so many books to choose from, how can we choose which are scary, safe, or good–and maybe great? In this talk, Matthew Bianco will offer some helpful “wandering advice,” principles identified by previous generations. In addition, he’ll examine some great books to consider their quality, and see if we can decide whether our favourite contemporary books could one day be great.
