The Passion and Death of Christ is one of the most fearful and awe-inspiring elements of the Gospel narratives. J.S. Bach wrote his St. Matthew Passion oratorio for the service of Good Friday, masterfully setting the 26th and 27th chapters of the Gospel of St. Matthew, interspersed with chorales and aria.

In this course, we will explore the masterpiece of the St. Matthew Passion, listening to excerpts of the music and analyzing both the musical settings as well as the libretto. We will also turn to the Gospel itself and compare the theological and narrative insights with Bach’s setting.

Though this course will include music theory and listening, fret not, it is open to anyone of any experience. In fact, the purpose of this course includes opening the ears of those inexperienced with musical theory to the beauty of this Quadratic art.

Please join us in attending to one of the greatest musical artifacts of the Western musical tradition while preparing our hearts and minds for the sobriety and beauty of the season of Great Lent.
