Presented at the CiRCE Fall Regional Conference 2024.

Modern people think of history and law as separate “subjects” with distinct content and methodologies, but ancient peoples saw them as part of the unified experience of belonging to a nation or a people. The primary way of participating in the Law of God was through certain habits of time, originating in ancient Judaism and carried forward into Christianity, finally finding their fullest expression in the civilization of the Middle Ages. People in the Middle Ages not only expected history to repeat itself; they welcomed it, and made its recapitulation the basis of a whole philosophy of education. This talk will examine Irish, Anglo-Saxon, and Byzantine habits of time with an eye towards integrating those habits into the rhythms of our homes and the education of our children.
