Reconsidering Memory: Toward a Medieval Understanding of the Art of Memoria

Katerina Kern

Presented at the CiRCE Fall Regional Conference 2022.

Before modern education reduced the art of memory to regurgitation, memory was practiced as a creative art, a way of understanding and transforming the world and yourself. In order to rediscover this ancient understanding of memory, this talk will explore how thinkers like Hugh of Saint Victor, Teresa of Avila, and Mary the Mother of Christ understood and practiced memory. We will also practice various memory techniques that you can use yourself or in your classroom.
