Mystery and Sacrament in George MacDonald’s The Princess and the Goblin

Vigen Guroian

Presented at the CiRCE Fall Regional Conference 2022.

G. K. Chesterton credited The Princes and the Goblin with opening his eyes to a sacramental way of looking at the world that his conversion to Roman Catholicism only “crowed and confirmed.” In this lecture I endeavor to show how that vision unfolds in MacDonald’s story and what it tells us about the spiritual maturation of the story’s principal protagonist, the princess Irene.
