One of the most iconic of medieval poems, the Song of Roland recounts the virtue, betrayal, and sacrifice of one of the greatest knights of Christian Europe. In a world that can no longer truly account for a sense of self and justice that would account for acts of heroic sacrifice, the Song of Roland stands as witness of a time when both such essential understandings were not just known but embodied. As reading cannot truly be divorced from writing if thinking is to be improved, this course will accomplish both by training the students in the topics, forms, and stylistic devices found in the Lost Tools of Writing level one.
