This course combines the Lost Tools of Writing Level One with a taste of the Greek epics, Shakespeare, British literature, and American literature, plus something outside the British and American experience. We begin with a gentle read of Homer’s Iliad using a modern translation followed by Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Second semester kicks off with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, followed by American works The Great Gatsby and the play A Raisin in the Sun, and ending with Rilla of Ingleside (WWI from the Canadian perspective). Class time is divided evenly between writing instruction and literature discussion with a bit of poetry thrown in for good measure. Students are encouraged to read The Iliad for Boys and Girls or Black Ships Before Troy over the summer to get an overview of the story.
