Classes begin in January 2025

This semester-long course covers the basics of college rhetoric, from public speaking to elegant, scholarly writing. Students will learn to use schemes and tropes effectively, think logically, examine an issue from all sides, use a memory palace to give a public speech extemporaneously, and, most importantly, move their community towards wisdom. This would be an excellent course to do before a senior thesis or on its own to prepare for college, where students will be expected to speak publicly, write effectively, and think deeply.

Unlike our other courses, this course is designed for college freshmen or advanced 11th and 12th graders. In the future, it will be offered for dual-enrollment. Unfortunately, we cannot offer college credit at this time.

COURSE GOALS:

The primary purpose of the course is for students to grow in wisdom and discernment and share that wisdom well with others. Secondarily, students will learn the skills of oral and written communication. They will build on the skills practiced in LTW 1, 2, and 3 and apply those skills to issues from contemporary politics to historical events.

COURSE MATERIALS:

– The CiRCE Guide to Reading
– College Rhetoric 101 course book (FREE digital copy provided by CiRCE)

COURSE PREREQUISITES:

This course is open to students in 11th and 12th grade who have successfully complete at least LTW 1. Students who wish to apply must submit a writing sample to show foundational writing and rhetoric skills; this sample may be an essay written for a previous course.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS:

This college-level course will hold all the same expectations as a freshman college course. Students will meet for class three times a week and complete around six hours of homework per week. Students with more than three unapproved absences will automatically be moved to auditing status and will not have their tuition refunded. If you cannot attend class, please do not enroll. Likewise, unapproved late homework will receive an automatic zero. Students should expect about six hours of homework per week, as is fitting for a college level course. As in college, we will not contact parents if a student is not doing the work or is skipping class, he or she will simply be moved to auditing status and will no longer receive a grade or be able to list this course on their transcript.
