The CiRCE Online Conference Begins This Friday!

Technology and virtue

What are we to do with technology?

Smug or insecure people want to ignore the argument. It can’t be done. We can neither do whatever we want with technology, nor pretend it is evil or doesn’t exist.

I regard technology and invention as one of the greatest indications of our godlike nature. We are creators and inventors and it is a beautiful thing. For this reason, technology is too important to embrace uncritically.

I love my toaster, but that doesn’t mean it’s OK to make pop tarts for breakfast every day.

If we can show that we are using technology to cultivate the virtues in our children and students, then it has a case. If we are going to argue that it will help them get ahead or score better or gain power, we need to read I Corinthians more closely.
