The Fables of Aesop is out now!

Another Reason to Read Shakespeare

There are poets who rise up to and transcend the form of their poetry. There are poets who fail to attain the form. Shakespeare is both. When you read, for example, Henry VI 1,2, and 3, you are reading a poet learning the craft. The poetry is forced and excessively formal.

When you read Richard III, say, Shakespeare has attained equality with the form. But his writing is still quite formal.

When you read The Tempest you are reading a poet who cannot be contained by the forms. The amazing thing with Shakespeare is how fast he grew and how he did it where we can watch it happen.
